Expectations For Volunteering

In order to make the volunteering experience a positive one for the volunteer and the contracting organization, ServiceLink has some expectations regarding the volunteer. These include the following:

  • be a practicing Christian
  • be a U.S. or Canadian citizen or live in the U.S. or Canada
  • experience good health
  • have a desire to serve God among the poor, needy and vulnerable
  • possess a practical working knowledge of the Bible
  • be mature, adaptable and flexible
  • be able to work as a team member
  • participate in pre-trip orientation
  • be willing to accept living conditions in the developing world
  • be at least 18 years old **

In addition we would like to say something about costs as they pertain to the volunteer opportunities we offer. Our volunteers help organizations that primarily reach out to people who are on limited resources. Consequently, as a volunteer you are not only giving of your time but often will also be required to provide finances that may be necessary to accomplish your tasks. Costs that may apply include the following:

  • transportation to the field and back
  • health and travel insurance
  • expenses associated with pre-trip orientation
  • field logistics (accommodations, meals, local transportation, etc.)
  • passport
  • vaccinations
  • language classes (if available and necessary)
  • background check

** ServiceLink will accept those younger than 18, but generally as part of a team with older adults in attendance.
